The Bridge Between Good and Excellent: Manufacturing-as-a-Service

JANUARY, 2023

As Emplus thrives to be Your Best Partner, we view Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) to be taken as one of our company missions to help customers bring products to the market in the shortest time possible and with the best quality.

With MaaS, customers can leverage the engineering, equipment and man-power resources available at Emplus during different stages of product development from design, prototyping, testing, material procurement, production, logistics and RMA operations. Emplus can offer these “services” in the following categories:

  • Product Development Phase

    • Product and component review:

In the beginning stage of design, the hardware R&D team will review and select components to ensure sufficient tolerances are designed-in to ensure the desired product life and quality requirements are met. Also during Engineering (EVT) or Design-Verification (DVT) or Pilot Production (PVT) sample runs, any units that exhibited any inconsistencies or failures will be analyzed thoroughly. By identifying the root cause, the risks of failures in the future can be greatly minimized.
    • Quality Assurance:

Once prototypes are built, they will undergo a full range of reliability tests such as electrical, mechanical, and environmental examinations. Furthermore, deep analysis will also be done including signaling test, wireless radio performance, electrostatic discharge (ESD)/ surge, shock and vibration, drop, waterproof, operating temperature test, highly accelerated life testing (HALT), environment thermal test, etc. With the complete set of reliability tests done by Emplus, the quality of the product is ensured.

  • Mass Production Phase

    • Incoming Quality Control:

Manufacturing a quality product starts with sourcing good quality materials and components. Therefore, Emplus constantly reviews and inspects vendors to choose the most suitable sources are used. When delivered to Emplus, the IQC team will check and verify the quality of parts’ material through either testing, inspection, and document/specification verification before the material is allowed into the warehouse.
    • Full Coverage in Final Test:

During product assembling, Emplus will test and verify all functions such as hardware connectors, LED lights, memory/storage, radio transmit and receiver performance, power input or output, Ethernet connection, waterproof seal., etc. This is done on 100% of manufactured products, with certain products even going through a high temperature burn-in test. This testing process ensures each product can be shipped to end-customers as fully working units without defects.
    • Rolling Reliability Testing:

As part of the quality cross-checking process, Emplus will randomly sample units that are being produced on the manufacturing line to ensure that the same and equal performance and quality is maintained throughput the whole batch. Thus, whenever some inconsistency is found it can be rectified immediately rather than finding out after thousands of units have been made.
    • Pre-shipment Samples Inspection:

Before Emplus ships out final goods to customers, all products will be inspected with strict acceptable quality limit (AQL) standard to ensure devices function as expected and comply with the specifications and performance requirements.

  • Post-Mass Production Phase

    • Early Product Launch Support:

During the initial stage of product launch, Emplus hopes that all product launches as fully successful, however in the unlikely event that some negative feedback is received from the field, then Emplus will take immediate action to gather the data and take correction actions if needed to ensure problems do not exist in future shipments.
    • Return Material Authorization (RMA) Trend Analysis:

When there has been a report of a significant rise in cases, the engineering team at Emplus will analyze failure units to determine the root cause in order to apply fixes immediately to production, and also Emplus operations will determine the best method to make corrections to products already shipped out.
    • Alternate Material Source Qualification:

Usually, raw material supply may be inconsistent due to external factors like the Covid-19 pandemic or market factors that drives costs up. As a result, Emplus will continuously search for suitable alternate sources and when found will put prototypes through rigorous testing to check the functional, electrical, performance and certification impact. The continuation of testing different resources will be done to ensure the shortage problem can be minimized and not impact delivery schedules.

Incorporating MaaS, customers can focus on planning and marketing new product and innovating new applications while leaving the design, qualification, manufacturing, and shipping to Emplus. Therefore, our customers can enjoy the benefits of shortened development schedule, receive high quality of products with the goal of boosting revenue and gaining more market share.
