IEC 62368-1 Edition 2 Vs. Edition 3

Is Now the Time to Transition From IEC 62368-1 Edition 2 to Editions 3 and 4?

New Manufacturers and suppliers using IEC 62368-1 Edition 2 may wonder if now is the right time to transition to the latest editions of the standard. With some countries already adopting Edition 3 as the national standard, any new product designs should use Edition 3 to optimize the useful life of the design. To ensure compliance, we already use Edition 3 for all new product safety certifications. We also intend to switch to Edition 4 upon its release in April 2023.


For existing product safety certifications, we follow the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) to determine whether transitioning to Edition 3 is required. Currently, the OJEU still uses Edition 2. This is expected to change on the 6th of July in 2024 when the OJEU announces the Date of Withdrawal. So, existing product safety certifications can still use Edition 2, but they need to start planning for the required transition in the middle of 2024.
